Late 19th century:

Although still debatable, few says that denim was born in Nimes, France under a serendipitous attempt by French fabric weavers. These weavers used indigo dye to color the fabric and created a blue and white product then known as Serge de Nimes. Jeans wore usually by miners, cowboys in the late 19th century to early 20th century.  Indigo is a natural dye exported to European countries from India.

The indigo dyed denim is attributed to the works of Jacob Davis, a renowned tailor and Levi Strauss, a San Francisco based retailer. Davis and Strauss initially made jeans in two types of fabric, brown duck and blue denim. The 501 Levi's style was originated in 1890.
